Congratulations to John Anderson AO

LEADER of The Nationals Warren Truss has paid tribute to former leader of the Party John Anderson, who was made an Officer in the Order of Australia in today’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List. The award recognised his unwavering support of rural and regional communities over a distinguished 18-year federal political career.John is a worthy recipient. Deputy Prime Minister from 1999 to 2005, he was first elected at a by-election following the retirement of Ralph Hunt, winning the NSW seat of Gwydir.
Noted for his erudite and articulate manner, John’s political star rose rapidly, and he was appointed to the Opposition frontbench in 1992. In March 1993, John was elected Deputy Leader of the National Party.
Upon winning the 1996 federal election, John became Minister for Primary Industries and Energy and, in 1998, became Minister for Transport and Regional Development.
Following Tim Fischer’s retirement as National Party leader in July 1999, John was elected unopposed as party leader and, thus, became Deputy Prime Minister. He frequently filled the post of Acting Prime Minister, including during the September 11 crisis and the Ansett collapse.
Key successes for John and The Nationals included protection for the regions during the privatisation of Telstra. It was telling that, in government, The Nationals fought for, and won, safeguards against higher charges and reduced services for regional people.
In June 2005, he announced his resignation from the ministry and as Party leader to spend time with his wife Julie and their family.
He remained the Member for Gwydir until the 2007 federal election when he retired from politics after an 18-year contribution to his community, party and nation.
Today’s honour is a fitting tribute for John’s distinguished service to the Parliament of Australia, and in particular his support of rural and regional communities, transport development, and water management initiatives.
